OAMARU FORESHORE PROTECTION
GROYNES TO BE CONSTRUCTED Work is to be commenced almost immediately. with the construction of three groynes as.a part, of the Oamaru foreshore protective . .work. Mr P. H. Morey (district, railways engineer) said this morning that.the. groynes would run stragiht out from the shore, and not slightly to the south as was at first proposed. . It is hoped that these will build up the shingle on the beach and so make an additional protection. Each groyne will project 6ft above high water level, and will be 100 ft in length. The top will be 10ft wide to carry a normal gauge line for the purpose of transporting the rock with which the under-water portions _of the groynes will be protected. This rock will be dumped in blocks of up to 10 tons weight, and will be obtained from the Railway Department’s quarry in the Waimate Gorge. In preparation for the work, the piles are being prepared for driving at Oamaru, and a 25ft tunnel is being driven into the face of the quarry. When this is complete a charge of about 60 eases of monbael will .be put in and fired. It is anticipated that this will bring down from 9,000 to. 10,000 tons of material, all of which will be used for the work at Oamaru.
