A SUBSTANTIAL IMPROVEMENT GOOD FINANCIAL BAROMETER [From Our Parliamentary Reporter.] WELLINGTON, September 24. “ Five months’ experience of the current financial year indicates that the business of the Post and Telegraph Department is showing a substantial improvement on the previous year’s period,” stated the Postmaster-Gene-ral, Mr Jones. “ The total revenue for the five months,” said Mr Jones, “ was £1,546,014, showing an increase over the corresponding five months of 1935 of £107,165. The improvement is spread over all the principal headings: —Postages, £539,777 (increase £31,011); telegraphs, £121,476 (increase £10,973) ; tolls, £218,677 (increase £21,236); telephones, £541,505 (increase £40,882).’’ “ On the Savings Bank side,” added the Minister, “ the same progress is being shown. The excess of deposits over withdrawals for the month of August was £259,703, while the excess of deposits over withdrawals _ for the five .• months of this financial year amounts to £1,557,986.
