KNOX CHURCH

FAREWELL TO DR EATON Stuart Hall was well filled last night, when the congregation of Knox Church met to say farewell to Dr 0. L. Eaton, who leaves at an early date to fill a vacancy on the staff of the Canton Villages Mission of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand. Dr Eaton’s appointment to the mission staff has been made possible by the generosity of a Knox Church family, which has made itself responsible for his salary, and due acknowledgment of this was made by various speakers at last night’s gathering. The R ov. D. C. Herron presided, and extended to Dr Eaton the good wishes of the congregation. Remarks in similar strain wore made by Miss lona Livingstone (representing the Sunday school scholars), Mr Don Malcolm (Biblo classes), Miss E. Glendinning (Young Women’s Society), Mrs J. R. Fairbairn (P.W.M.U. and Ladies’ Association), and Air R. Miller (officebearers), all these speakers making a presentation to Dr Eaton on behalf of the organisations they represented. Dr Eaton expressed his appreciation of the generosity that had made it possible for him to go out to China as one of Knox Church’s “ Own Missionaries.” He acknowledged the gifts he had received and the good wishes extended to him by the various speakers. Good wishes for his future well-being and the success of his work in China were also extended by Dr Howie, who is at present on leave from the Canton Village Mission, the Rev. J. M. M'Kenzie, of Oamaru, who was formerly on the staff of the mission, and Dr W. J. Porteous, a former member of the mission staff at Jagadhri, India. Before the conclusion of the meeting it was decided to send the greetings of the congregation to Rev. Clarence and Mrs Eaton, of Christchurch, the parents of the outgoing missionary. During the evening Miss Joan M'Lay rendered a solo, and at the conclusion of the formal proceedings supper was served.
