ANNUAL MEETING SUCCESSFUL YEAR REVIEWED . The enthusiasm of members for the coming season was shown by the large attendance at the annual meeting of the Kiwi Amateur Swimming Club in the baths’ clubroom la?t night, the president (Mr-S. Brown) presided over an attendance of 150 members. Before the business of the meeting, the Chairman made reference to the death of Mr Vernon Smith, a vice-pre-sident of the club, since the previous annual meeting. He said that Mr Smith had been a very staunch supporter of the club, which was perpetuating his memory by the award of a Vernon Smith Memorial Cup. Mr Brown also referred to the death of Mrs Gillies, the mother of a former club captain, and members stood in silence for a moment as a mark of respect to the memory of the deceased. CHAIRMAN’S REMARKS. In moving the adoption of the annual report and balance sheet, the Chairman said that members could look upon the year as the most successful in the history of the club. He referred to the fine work of the coaches, and said, that, with the tremendous junior membership now possessed by the club, it was up to all experienced swimmers in the club to assist in Winging them forward to competitive standard. Mr Brown said that the. growth of the club had been in common with the progress made by swimming in Otago in the last few years, and he expressed pleasure that plans were now taking shape which had as _ their objective a modern Olympic swimming pool for Dunedin. The Otago Centre was moving actively in the matter, and bad, already conferred with the City Council, which was showing very practical sympathy with the project. He_ stressed the need for a new pool, which would be one of the city’s amenities, and said that the clubs had done their share to make the present baths popular with the public. He expressed the thanks of members to the City Council for the facilities provided by granting the club three club hours a week, and said that the action of the Boy Scouts’ Association in sharing its Saturday night hour with the club was much appreciated. With the advent of the 40-hour week there should be more time for those who indulged in swimming, and thus the work of the clubs would take on more value.
Referring to the many outstanding successes of club members during the season, Mr Brown said that P. E. Mathieson’s brilliant exploits in Australia and at the New Zealand championships were a source of great pride to members, and they all regretted that he had not been rewarded by selection in the New Zealand team for th Olympic Games. The many championship successes of club members were covered in the annual report, but he desired particularly to mention. Miss I. Purdie, who won the New Zealand intermediate girls’ 100yds and 220yds free style championships at Hamilton, and established New Zealand records in each event. She was one of many fine intermediate girl swimmers who owed her success in good measure to the coaching of the ladies’ captain, Miss M. Boulton.
Mr Brown touched on the exceptional performances of M. Passmore in gaining so many certificates within a very short time of his learning to swim, and also congratulated the intermediate and junior members on their successes at the intermediate and junior championships and at the various schools’ carnivals. ‘
Congratulations were tendered to the club’s A team on winning the water polo competition and the B team on being runners-up in its grade. Mr Brown specially mentioned Mr Don Watson for his fine work as coach. He thanked the Ladies’ Committee > for its work during the year, and specially mentioned Mrs 'Boulton and Mrs Hindmarsh. The success of the * Star ’- Police carnival, D.I.C. carnival, and parents’ night had been the result of hard work on the part of the committee, and he referred to the generosity of the club’s supporters, which had made both _ carnivals a financial success, and which had led to the year finishing with a satisfactory balance in place of the deficit faced at the beginning. The motion was seconded by Mr P. H. Boulton, who urged young members to pay attention to the coaches and to take every advantage of the facilities for coaching offered by the club. Mr A. B. Armour paid a tribute to the executive officials of the club, and also congratulated the committee on the successful year that had been 'experienced. The report and balance sheet were adopted. The appointment of the Coaching Committee and Water Polo Selection
Committee were left to the incoming committee. A presentation was made to Mrs Pw H. Boulton, convener of the Ladies*' Committee, in appreciation of hen work during the year, and the club also made a presentation to Miss I* Purdie in recognition of her performance in establishing New Zealand intermediate girls’ records for 100yds and 220yds free style in winning these events at the New Zealand intermediate and junior championship meet-, ing at Hamilton last January. Senior trophies were presented as follow : —Halliday Cup and miniature (club championship), P. E. Mathiesonj Ladies’ Challenge Cup and miniature (ladies’ championship), Miss C. Knowles: Murdoch Memorial Cup (club diving championship) and miniature, 1). Freeman'; Senior Improvement Cup, D. Freeman. It was decided to hold a parents*night on October 6, at the club hour. The secretary was instructed to write to members of the baths staff thanking them for their assistance during the year. . A motion was also carried that club handicap competitions in all classes commence on October C,. the committee to draw up conditions for the various competitions. It was decided to stage the ‘ Star Police carnival at the chib hour 6u November 12.
