GREATER ROAD SAFETY
NEW COUNCIL SETS TO WOK [Per United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, September 23. . The New Zealand Road Safety Council appointed by the Minister of Transport held its inaugural meeting to-day, and after preliminary discussion with the Minister (as chairman of the council) went into committee to discuss proposals for greater road safety. The proposed new motor regulations and a draft of the enforcement Bill are being made available for consideration. Mr Laurenson, of the Transport Department, was elected deputy-chair-man, and a motion was carried thanking the Minister for the preparatory work he had done for road safety. The Minister said that the conference in August had a fine psychological effect. That would be proved when the council got to work and started its educational campaign. There was much to be done to prevent accidents. It was only a question of proper control, and that would only be possible if New Zealand had an educated motoi'iug and pedestrian population. A motion of thanks was carried to Mr Semple for his address, and every indication was given of a concerted effort to achieve the ends in view.
