“SEA-HIKER" SMOKES CIGAR
HALF AN HOUR IN WATER Hikers, give up tramping along dusty roads. Get a “ sea-hiking ” suit from Mr Marcus, a French inventor, and stroll across the Channel. Dover to Calais would make a nice 20-mile Sunday stroll. And you won’t get wet—unless it happens to be raining! A special 1 Daily Sketch ’ representative put the sea-hiking suit through a thorough test in a choppy sea off Southend. It emerged triumphant—and with a dry interior. Jack Brown, assistant of Mr Marcus, put on, over his ordinary suit, a waterproof costume, covering him to his neck, a pair of heavy leaded boots, a pair of rubber gloves, and round his waist a belt of corks. His head and face were entirely uncovered. Thus equipped, he strode into sea from the beach and started out for a stroll. Crowds gathered on the pier to watch this strange phenomenon of a man walking on the sea. The sea was so choppy and the tide and wind so strong that men in a following boat had great difficulty in rowing. But Brown, upright as if on land, and using his arms and legs as if walking on the streets of London, strode on unperturbed and even smoked a cigar ns he did so. Not a drop of water touched his face. He reached the steps of the pier, up which he clambered, absolutely fresh and ready, as he said, to walk many more miles if desired.
