MAYFAIR
The two pictures at present at the Mayfair are ‘ Whipsaw ’ and ‘ Hands Across- the Table.’ The first stars Myrna Loy and Spencer Tracy in a story of romance, comedy, and adventure in the secret service. Miss Loy has the part of an elusive and attractive young jewel robber. The plot, moving from London to New York and then to a rural Missouri district via other cities, is a very fast-moving one, and comes to a thrilling finale. Other actors are Harvey Stephens, William Harrigan, Robert Warwick, and Irene Franklin. ‘ Hands Across the Table ’ features Carole Lombard and Fred Mac Murray in a light story of a manicure girl and a rich young society man. ‘ CAPTAIN BLOOD.’ A rollicking story of adventure is presented in ‘ Captain Blood,’ a Warner Brothers’ production, which will be commenced to-morrow at the Mayfair. With a background created by the thunder of cannon, the clash of rapier and cutlass, and the creak of ships’ yards straining under full sail, fho story of Dr Peter Blood, whose destiny led him into slavery and thence to buccaneer triumphs and the Governorship of a West Indian island, is followed amid increasing excitement. The title role is played by Errol Flynn, an Australian actor, who gives a fine performance in his first American picture. He receives excellent support from a large and admirably chosen cast, among whom Lionel At will, Ross Alexander, Guy Kibbee, and Basil Rathbone have outstanding individual scenes. Olivia de Haviland makes a charming heroine, who can be imperious and tender without violating the spirit of the period.
