YACHTING SMOKE CONCERT
PORT CHALMER'S CLUB’S FUNCTION Counted one of the most enjoyable yachting social events of the year, the annual smoke concert of the Port Chalmers Yacht and Motor Boat Club, at its headquarters on Saturday night, certainly fulfilled its reputation, a thoroughly representative assemblage participating in a notable function. The club’s commodore (Mr W. Watson) presided. Among those present was the Mayor of Port Chalmers (Mr T. Scollay). The first toast of the evening was “ The Competitors,” proposed by Mr H. Camp, who stressed that the success of any aquatic event entirely rested on the competitors, without whose co-operation any sport would suffer. He hoped that this spirit would continue, and remarked that with the introduction of the 40-hour week more time would be devoted to yachting during week-ends. _ The owners of the following boats were presented by the mayor with trophies won during the past season: - Yachts: Tucana and Starlight (equal) 1 Foam 2, Shadow and Eileen (equal) 3 Boys’ race: Iris 1, Runa 2. Motor boats: Shirley 1, Vyella 2, Sister Radius 3. Model yachts: J. Phillips 1, C. Smith and W. Harris (equal) 2, G. Pistor 3. Second class: D. Dixon I, A. Rose 2. The toast of the “ Port Chalmers Yacht and Motor Moat Club ” was proposed by Mr AV. Riddell, ibis club, he said, had possessed some of the oldest devotees of the sport in the harbour, such as Messrs G. Wiseman and Charles Smith He referred to the dark administrative cloud that loomed over the sport, and appealed for a more amicable spirit of control ot yachting in the province. The Port ChaJmeis Club was not on the register of the association, but he hoped it would be when the sport was placed on a better commodore responded to the toast. , , , , A handsqnie trophy, to he known as the R A. Ward Memorial Cup, to be competed for annually in the all-com-ers’ race, was banded over to the club by Mr W. J- Wilson (president of the New Zealand Rowing Association), on behalf of the widow and family of Mr Ward whom the chairman characterised as a true, faithful, and generous supporter of the club. The assemblage stood in silence as a mark of respect to the memory of the deceased gentleman. . , .. Eulogistic reference was made by the commodore to the regard in which Mr Joe Potter and Mr Les Wilson (clubhouse custodian) were held by Port Chalmers aquatic sportsmen. As tangible recognition of the club’s gratitude for their services, they were the recipients of presentations.
