basketball. The challenge match for the County Cup was played at Balclutha on Saturday between West Otago and South Otago, the result being a win for the home team by 10 points to 8 points. The game was fast and exciting, the teams being evenly matched- W est- Otago played a strong, consistent game, char acteriSed by long, swiit pr.—es. South Otago were more erratic, an i although the shoots had plenty of o....ortunity to score they were not so successful as their opponents, who were more accurate when they were given a c'-ance. The South Otago game was neat and pretty to watch, although marred at times by misjudged passes and slow movements The West Otago players, particularly in defence, were much ahead of South Otago. In the second spell South Otago made a better showing. . Of the individual players, B. Thompson, the West Otago wing centre, was very prominent, while for South Otago Brenda Mitchell played a brilliant game throughout. West Otago took the ball from the throw-off and the shoots scored G. Jury adding one for South Otago almost immediately. 1-1. From an infringement in the centre L. Scott secured the ball, passed to the South Otago shoots, and A. Bell scored. 2-1. For some time play was in favour of South Otago, and the scores went to 4-1, A Bell and D. Algie scoring. There was a period of scrambling play.at this point. B. Mitchell, by clever interception, kept the ball from the West Otago shoots, working well with D. Lyall in the centre. Some rather poor play in the South Otago centre gave West Otago a chance, and until half-time was called thev dominated the play, each of the three shoots scoring and making the half-time scores 5 1 in favour of the visitors. It was noticeable dur’"" game that the different style of play adopted by the two teams led to inoie infringements by the West Otago players than in the case of South Otago. Frequently the long pass meant the ball went clean over a whc 1 .; section untouched by any player, thus giving South Otago an unguarded pass. West Otago infringed more freouently at the throw-ins from the end line. South Otago, on the other hand, did not realise that to break down tluir opponents’ game they should have intercepted more of the long passed by jumping. The West Otago players made some very spectacular leaps to get possession. At the commencement of the second snell G. Jury evened the scores. 5 5. T>lay was very fast at this stage, and the South Otago passing very good. The scores continued evenly to 7 all, when South Otago took fho T''e J"’''*' were well supplied with the hall, R. Scott in particular exerting herself in the centre. At 19-7 the u’u- "d up a little, and J. Buchanan added a

goal for West Otago, making the final scores 10-8. Miss J. Kidd, of Clinton, made a most efficient referee.
