L on the windscreen of a London motor vehicle stands for learner. But not always. Observant'' drivers have noticed that L stands for easier passage. L drivers are given plenty of room in which to make mistakes; are treated indulgently by policemen; can go through traffic, particularly on straight stretches, more quickly because experienced drivers give them a, wide berth. A few old hands—particularly lorry drivers—are taking advantage of this by sticking untruthful L.’s on their vehicles. .
