ARTILLERY RAND
YESTERDAY'S CONCERT Among the most popular entertainments of the present day are band concerts, and yesterday afternoon’s performance at the Botanical Gardens was no exception. The playing of the Artillery Band (Southern Command) under the baton of Lieutenant A. W. E. Webb attracted a large audience, and was much appreciated by young and old alike, the programme being appropriate for a Sunday concert. _ The variety of the items was appreciated. The honours of the afternoon went to Bandsman J. R. Marshall, who rendered the trombone solo, ‘ Drinking.’ with very definite success. The whole programme was given with refreshing crispness, and much light and shade was noticeable throughout. The selection ‘ In the Sudan ’ was greatly enjoyed. Other items that were well received were ‘ Amparita Boco ’ (the sheltered cliff), the hymn ‘Deep Harmony, two excellent and very full marches, ‘ Autumn Showers,’ a dainty valse, and the patriotic march, * Here’s To Our New King.’ The band has commenced practice on the test selection for the contest to be bold at Gore m November next. The contest fund will benefit substantially by yesterday’s collection. The response of the public i-, r Mis p.-procinted.
