APPEAL FOR MUSIC.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—l see by to-night’s paper that the men at the Homer tunnel are collecting for a piano for their camp. In such places, so far from home, a singson" ” is more appreciated than even a radio. There is another country settlement of town dwellers where a piano and some song books would be tory welcome additions to the attractiveness and happiness of the place. 1 refer to the Rest Home at Warrington. To this place come women from all over Otago for a spell after discharge from hospital, to rest before going into hospital or to heal jagged nerves. Fveu in such a pleasant spot winters happen and so do wet days, not to mention evenings. In the spacious lounge relaxed in a fat chair in front of a log fire, one can kmt and defv the elements. And how a little music is appreciated! Such is supplied at present by a gramophone somewhat asthmatic, with ancient records and still more ancient needles, and an organ with a rather difficult disposition —-difficult, that is, for neurotic arms or varicose legs to manipulate. A piano would be quite a different proposition. Not a noisy, shoutin" instrument, but a quiet-toned old one and some ‘ Globe ’ song books or ni""er minstrels. The women inmates of “the home are for the most part total strangers to one another, but all join in the old songs, sung without accompaniment, and soon find themselves friends. So if there is an old piano looking for a home I am sure the matron will adopt it and the patients give it a kind if strenuous welcome.— I am, etc.. Convalescent. September 19.
