MORNINGTON METHODIST CHURCH
DIAMOND JUBILEE On Thursday evening the jubilee banquet of the Mornington Methodist Church was held in the Sunday School Hall. Sixteen large tables, beautifully decorated by the ladies of the guild were needed to accommodate the large number of friends who had journeyed from far and near to join in the festivities. The roll call showed that among those present were some whose association with the church covered the whole jubilee period. A number of ladies who had been connected with the church before 1900, lighted the 60 candles on the jubilee cake. The Mayor (the Rev. E. T. Cox), as chairman, paid a tribute to the work of the pioneers in a happy speech. This theme was elaborated by Mr J. W. Patton, who, in proposing the toast of »“ The Pioneers,” traced the early history of Methodism in Mornington. Mr W. L. Tennet responded, and made reference to many of the great names of the early days l . A speech written by Mr J. F. Cunliffe, who was unable to be present, was read in support of. the response. Other toasts honoured were—“ The Methodist Church,” proposed by Mr F. G. Marshall, and responded to by the Rev. C. H. Olds; “ Sister Churches,” proposed by the Rev. D. 0. Williams, and responded to by the Revs. F. V. Fisher and A. Watson. . At the close of the festivities a bouquet and a piece of the jubilee cake were sent to Mrs L. S'andford, of Maori Hill, who is the oldest surviving member of the Mornington Methodist Church.
