BRITISH SAVINGS BANK SEVENTY-FIVE YEARS OF PROGRESS. (British Official Wireless.) Press Association—-By Telegraph—Copyright RUGBY, September 16. Tile Post Office Savings Bank was opened 75 years ago to-day. From the beginning the bank made uninterrupted progress. When the hank was opened in 1861, 300 post offices were authorised to conduct savings bank business. Within three months _ the number was 1,700, and to-day it is 16,500 There are now some 10,000,000 depositors, and the total amount owned by them exceeds £414,000,000. The average deposit of £4l compares with £3l five years ago, an 'indication both of the more prosperous condition of the country and the increased popularity of the Savings Bank.
