Tradesmen who formerly worked five and a-half days a week, but who have now been awarded the five days’ week of 40 hours, are warned by the Minister of Labour that they must not undertake work at their trade on .their own account on Saturdays. “ Complaint by employers has been made to me that tradesmen, such as plumbers, are doing this,” said the Minister to-day. “ By such actions they are taking an unfair advantage of their employers, who have been compelled to restore the cuts and pay for five days’ work a wage equivalent to that of five and a-half days.” The Minister expressed doubt as to whether the complaints were justified, but indicated that steps would be taken by the Government to prevent anything of the kind. He mentioned that Government servants' had been included in the complaints, and added that they would be treated the same in regard to Saturday work as were the employees of private concerns. _____
