LICENSE FEES INCREASED 2/6 GOES TO GOVERNMENT [Per United Phess Association.] WELLINGTON, September 17. The fisheries Amendment Bill was put through all its stages in the House of Representatives to-day. The Bill provides for an increase in fishing license fees chargeable by acclimatisation societies, and for the payment of part of that increase to tiie Government, to be devoted toward the cost of research into fresh-water fisheries. The Minister of Marine (Mr Fraser), moving the second reading of the Bill, stated that the fees to he charged by acclimatisation societies would be fixed by Order in Council, it was proposed to increase the license fees by ss, and of this amount 2s Gd would go to the society concerned and 2s Gd to the Government for research purposes. The estimated annual yield to the Government was £1,200. The research activities would be directed from Wellington. . “ The benefits ot proper research in trout fishing will more than compensate for the increase in the license fee,’’ the Minister added. “ Acclimatisation societies are practically unanimous in favouring the proposal.” The Minister said that a considerable amount of research was being carried out at the present time. The acclimatisation societies, however, had not the funds to do the job, and had asked the Marino Department to undertake the work. The Bill was read a second time and was put through its remaining stages.
