ALBION CRICKET CLUB
ANNUAL MEETING A note of optimism was struck by various speakers at the annual meeting of the Albion Cricket Club last night when Mr L. J. Joel presided over a good attendance of members. Reference was made by the chairman to the deaths of three members of the club during the season—Messrs J. J. Clark, J. Abbott, and A. Johnson. The Chairman said some 43 or 44 years ago Mr Clark came from Palmerston to Dunedin, and ever since _ then he had had his heart in the Albion Club. He had been president for ,23 years, and his passing represented a great loss to the club and to the game generally. Mr Abbott had been a vice-ipresident of the club for a number of years and had always done his best for the game, while Mr Johnson was also a keen supporter of the club. A resolution of sympathy with the relatives of the deceased was carried. ANNUAL REPORT. - Moving the adoption of the annual report and balance sheet, the Chairman said that the club had experienced a most successful season. The senior and intermediate elevens had both won their respective competitions, while the seniors had also tied with Grange in the competition for the late Mr J. J. Clark’s fielding trophy. The second grade A team had also performed well, not being defeated until the last two matches of the season. The club possessed a great asset in Logan Park, the playing conditions there being much v superior to any other in the Dominion. Next season it was hoped to have even better practice conditions, as arrangements had been made for the members to practise on the strip of wickets at eacn end of the ground every alternate season. He was sorry to hear that the club was losing one of its old stalwarts in Mr J. Barron, who had given useful service to the senior eleven for a number of years and who was also a valuable member of the committee. By the performance of the club’s junior teams he felt sure that Albion would be able to field a strong senior eleven for many years to come, and he saw no reason why they should not win the competition again in the coming season. In R. Silver the club had a bowler who made a name for himself last season when the Otago. Plunket Shield team played Canterbury at Christchurch. There was no doubt that Silver’s bowling in that match paved the way for Otago’s victory. Dealing with the financial aspect-of the' club, Mr-Joel said that the committee was deserving of the members,’ thanks, for a debit balance of £lB last year bad been converted into a credit of over £lO. He pointed out that, while the club had spent over £l2O, onlv £3B had been received in members’ subscriptions, of which all but £l2 had been Eaid. The Euchre Committee, whichad been engaged every Saturday night throughout the year, had been largely responsible for the greatly improved position. He appealed to members to assist the committee in every way possible, and reminded them that prompt payment of dues enabled the club to purchase material—at considerably reduced prices. The committee also had in view several proposals which would .improve playing facilities at Logan Park, but their realisation was dependent upon members’ financial assistance. Mr H. J. Duncan, who seconded the motion, paid a tribute to the work of the Euchre Committee, which had made a healthy balance sheet practicable. He congratulated the senior eleven on its performance- in not losing a match during the past season. The report struck an optimistic note, and the future of the club appeared bright. He paid a tribute to the secretary Mr H. J. Greenfield) and the treasurer (Mr V. Robinson) for the yeoman service rendered during the season. The motion was carried. OFFICE-BEARERS.
