HIGH SCHOOL GOVERNORS
MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of tho Otago High Schools’ Board of Governors was held on Wednesday afternoon, tho president (Mr W. 11. Brugh) being in the chair. There were also present the mayor (Mr E. T. Cox), Dr G. E Thompson and Messrs F. H. Campbell, J. C. 11. Sf merville, U. T. Fleming, and J. C, Robei’tson. A letter from the Minister of Education (the Hon. P. Fraser), advising that a grant had been made for additional accommodation at the King’s High School—namely, two additional class rooms, an art room, a prefect’s room, and provision for hot water heating, a heating chamber, electric light, drainage, fittings for a laboratory, a partition for the formation of a laboratory and store, necessary furniture, and tho erection of a bicycle shelter for 150 machines and a tool shed, was received. The Minister also advised that the proposal for the erection of a residence for the rector must stand over.—Received. The Chairman stated that, as the site of the rector’s house had not been definitely settled, the erection of the cycle shed could not. bo commenced.—Mr Campbell said that the work should be commenced as soon as possible. The difficulty arose from the question of the house encroaching upon the playing fields, and the extent to which it would reduce the area.—The Chairman stated that the area would not be affected to any appreciable extent.—lt was decided that tho suggestion of the Minister should be approved, and that he should be asked that the residence should be erected as soon as possible. It was decided that the site for the cycle shed should be left to the Works Committee. The Director of Education advised that approval had been given for an expenditure of £134 17s from endowment income to cover the cost of further renovations at the Otago Girls’ High School, and also for the sum of £45 5s 2d expended on urgent repairs at the Otago 'Boys’ and Girls’ Schools.—Received. ’ The Director of Education forwarded a circular memorandum advising that the department was now prepared to make grants in aid of the conveyance and board of pupils of post-primary schools, also advising the amendments to free place regulations.—Received. A communication was received from the Director of Education stating that the rates of capitation for manual and science instruction had been restored, as from July 1, 1936, to 2s and Is per annum in accordance to the subjects taken.—Noted. The Auckland Grammar Schools’ Board wrote regarding the question of unification of control.—lt was decided to support the movement, and the discussion was held over until the next meeting. A statement of receipts and payments in connection with the recent entertainment, also a cheque for £162 Os 7d, the amount of the net proceeds, was forwarded by the principal of the Otago Girls’ High School.—lt was decided to express the gratification of the board at the result of the function.
The Town Clerk wrote stating that authority had been given to make application to the Unemployment Board for the use of relief workers for an additional month to permit of the completion of the work on the Littleboume ground.—The letter was received. The Vocational Guidance Association wrote asking that a representative of the board should be reappointed to the association.—lt was decided that Mr Robertson should be re-elected. Mr, W. W. Bridgman wrote "expressing thanks for his reappointment to a grade B position in the Otago (Boys’ High School.—Received.
