SUNDAY CONCERTS.
TO THE EDITOR Sir,—Once again the Council ■of Christian Congregations is boating a dirge on that hoary old chestnut, Sunday concerts. Does this body really believe that Christianity can be forced down people’s throats and that a modicum of pleasure on Sundays can be banished at its sweet will? I earnestly suggest that the Council of Christian Congregations give this subject a muchneeded rest. A minority of kill-joys are not going to rule Dunedin, and this fact should be assimilated as soon as possible. If the concerts were ribald affairs one might understand it, but if a mere humorous remark is to be frowned upon on a Sunday then we would certainly he in a pitiable state indeed. I may be accused of being on the way to heathenism, and if so I would prefer this state to that of hypocritical Christianity. I may be unfortunate in my choice of locality, but I cannot see anything Christian-like in a man who, although he scorns the idea of pulling a weed from his garden on Sunday, does not hesitate on all possible occasions to work on Sundays when there is hard cash behind it. My experience with churchgoers of this sort is that they are out to grab all they can get, whether it is two jobs or two gardens, and though I may be a bit of a heathen now, I can remember enough from my early days to know that this was not His creed. Also, one does not expect Christian people to stand in their respective back yards and yell to one another across comebody else’s yard. I was always under the impression that this sort of conduct was unbecoming if not absolutely ignorant. Which all goes to show that my present-day opinion of religion _is not of the highest, and why I am intolerant of having this Sundayism forced down my throat.—l am, etc., Love Thy Neighbour.
