COMMUNITY SING
POPULARITY UNDIMINISHED Drawn by the very attractive programme arranged by Mr H, P. Desmoulins, the popular leader, another large and enthusiastic ■ crowd gathered l in the Strand Theatre to-day for the weekly community sing. A variety of choruses for all tastes, comprising the latest song “hits” and old-time numbers, met with a whole-hearted response, and for the spontaneous mirth and gaiety of the function no little measure of credit is due to Mr Desmoulins-for his untiring energy and resource in the production of new quips and sallies. The special item to-day was presented by Mr E. Murphy, the popular Otago Rugby representative, whose mouth organ solos, ‘ Boston Two-step ’ and Tosselli’s ‘ Serenade,’ were exceedingly well played, and l- earned him an ovation. , The Wellington football team took the stage to give two fine choruses ‘ Swiss Cradle Song ’ and ‘ M'Namara’s Band.’ Mr E. Murphy presented the manager of the team (Mr H Murphy! with a Wellington mascot, hoping that the match to-morrow would be a good one. . Mr Murphy returned thanks in a brief speech, stating that his team was looking forward to a good game, and he hoped the best team would win. Mr Himburg accepted an Otago mascot to hand to Mr J Tfoare, the Otago captain. Mr Tony Black, the Otago winger, was the recipient of a pair of black-and-white garters, which the female donor “ hoped would keep his socks up.” Mrs D. Carty, of London, sent in a Scottish tie and handkerchief, which is to be put up for auction next week. The collection to-dav totalled about £lB.
On October 2 a grand Scottish sing will bo held, the leaders will appear in kilts, and it is hoped that Miss Molly Doyle, of Üb'ff. the 13-year-old pipe player, will be present*
