CONSUMPTION OF FOOD

INCREASE IN BRITAIN STANDARD ALSO IMPROVED (British Official Wireless.) Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright RUGBY, September 15. Sir Kingsley Wood, Minister of Health, speaking at Plymouth on the problem of nutrition, said that the consumption of food of all kinds in the United Kingdom had grown considerably. To-day it was probably over 25,0fK),000 tons a year. The consumption of eggs, fruit, and vegetables had greatly increased. There had undoubtedly been at the same time a considerable improvement in food standards. Sixty years ago 15,000 samples only were submitted annually to public analysts, and over 19 per cent, were found to be adulterated or not up to standard. Last year over 143,000 samples were submitted, the highest on record, and the percentage of adulterated or not up to standard was only a little over 5 per cent.
