EILEEN JOYCE

FORTHCOMING RECITAL The box plau for the pianforte recital to be given by Miss Eileen Joyce, who is under engagement to the New Zealand Broadcasting Service, is now open at Begg’s, and seats at 3s and 2s can be reserved without tax or booking fee. For students and pupils, booking in parties of five or more, there will be special concession terms. It is reported that Miss Joyce played to a packed house in Christchurch recently, when she was prevailed upon to render several encores before retiring. In the Dunedin Town Hall on evening Miss Joyce will play ‘ Symphonic Varia/tions ’ (Cesar Franck), accompanied by the 4YA Symphony Orchestra of 40 players, conducted by Mr Gil Dech. When in his young days Franck set out on the path of pianist-composer, he had just gone far enough to see how very unsatisfactory such composing was. It was only after his death that his music was really appreciated. It then dawned on musicians that Franck was the one man who had prevented musical programmes from passing France by, while she neglected every branch of the arts except opera. He alone had carried on the work of the great composers, such as Beethoven, and he had left France the richer for his music. In Franck’s lifetime he was scarcely known except as an organist and a teacher. In this, too, he was like Bach. The performances of his works were few and poor. Like all great ■ composers, his works have lived, and his _ ‘ Symphonic Variations ’ is one that is played by artiste all the world over. Assisting Miss Joyce will be Mr Wilfred Kershaw (bass). Mrs Clarice Drake (accompanist). and 4YA Orchestra. _ The proceeds are for the mayor’s relief of distress fund.
