REPUBLICAN MAJORITIES

THE MAIHE ELECTIONS NOT A SWEEPING VICTORY. NEW YORK, September 15. Preliminary returns in the Maine elections indicate clear Republican majorities in four of the five important offices, but apparently the victory was not sweeping enough to indicate the national trend toward Governor Landon the Republican Party leadership hoped for. With approximately half the votes counted, the Republican gubernatorial candidate, Mr Barrows, has a lead of over 20,000 over the Democrat, Mr Dubord. On -the other hand, the Republican, Senator White, has only 8,000 plurality over his Democratic opponent, Mr Brann. The Republicans appear to have elected the State’s three representatives with moderate majorities.
