VARSITY OARSMEN
ROWING BECOMING POPULAR NEW SHED AND PLANT WANTED The increasing popularity of rowing as a sport at Otago University caused the University Rowing Club to ask the council yesterday to grant a loan of £3OO to provide a shed and slipway and a new four-oared boat. It stated that the Students’ Association was putting aside £4O annually towards paying off the loan, provided the Rowing Club raised £lO annually for the same purpose. The Chancellor (Mr W. J. Morrell) said he felt that the request would have the sympathy of the council, as rowing was a sport which should be encouraged. He proposed that the request be referred to the Finance Committee with power to act, after consultation with the Students’ Association. Mr F. W. Mitchell, a mom her, with Dr James Fitzgerald, of the Otago Rowing Club for 50 years, said he knew something of the vicissitudes of a rowing club. As the new season was fast approaching, he moved as an amendment that the council make a loan. The treasurer (Mr James Wallace) said ho would oppose the amendment, as a considerable sum of money was involved. There was no seconder for the amendment, which lapsed, and tho Chancellor’s motion was carried.
