AMATEUR CYCLING
FIFTY-MILE CHAMPIONSHIP RECORD ENTRIES RECEIVED The annual 50-mile Otago amateur road cycling championship, which is to be held on Saturday, has drawn a large contingent of Southland and Christchurch riders, a record number of 40 entries being received, and of this number 14 are coming from the northern city, while 13 entries have been received from Invercargill. The remainder of the entrants are from the Dunedin Club. It is very pleasing indeed to the officials of the Otago Centre, N.Z.A.C.A., which body has the promoting of the race, to know that such outside support is forthcoming. Included in the Christchurch competitors are F. J. Grose, New Zealand champion and New Zealand representative at the British Empire Games; Ivan Taylor, one of Canterbury’s best road riders; and A. J. Lancaster, another one of the Christchurch “ cracks.” The following officials have been appointed to control the race:—Superintendent, R, M'Cash; assistant superintendent, H. W. Laws; referee, J. A. Johnston; haudicapper, A. Ockwell; judges—R. Umbers, A. C. Paterson, J. Rewish; assistant to judges, W. Sivertsen; timekeepers—C. A. Lucas, J. Fletcher, A. Ockwell, F. Sutherland ; starter, J. Fletcher; course stewards—J. M'Connell, A. C. Paterson, W. Chalmers, D. Conner, E. Fletcher, J. Fogarty, A. Sinclair, J. Murray, A. Ockwell, J. Kewish, V. Laws, W. Templeton; costume and number steward, W. Chalmers; call stewards, E. Fletcher, H. R. Greenfield: Press steward, H. Annison; Protest Committee—R. M'Cash, H. Laws, J. A. Johnston, J. Kewish, and F. Sutherland. The race is timed to start at 2.15 from Burnside, riders to undress at Beale’s Hotel, Green Island. The course is the same as last year. Starting from Burnside, the riders proceed along the Main highway, branching off at EU'nley. From here the course leads through to Berwick, to Woodside, and through to Outram. The riders then come Tack through Outram and follow along the foothills down the road past the aerodrome. The course then leads the riders back past the Mosgiel station, turning on to the Main road to make for home.
The prize list, already published, is very attractive and is mainly responsible for_ attracting so many Christchurch riders.
