SWIMMING

KAIKGRAI CLUB FUNCTION PRESENTATION OF TROPHIES A gathering of more than 100 members and parents attended the prizegiving function of the Kaikorai Swimming Club, which was held last evening. In the chair was the president (Mr E, Millin), who, in his opening remarks, welcomed those present and referred to the progress made by the club during its short existence. The patron (Mr A. D. Sutherland) eulogised the value of the club to the district, also making complimentary reference to Mr Millin. He was of the opinion that when all the various benefits derived from swimming were more fully realised by the residents of the district, the membership of the club would increase considerably. The presentations were made in three sections—junior, intermediate, and senior—items being rendered by club members between each section. These items were greatly appreciated and provided bright interludes during the evening. Those who contributed to the programme were Misses Nancy Matheson and Rita Smith, dancing; Misses Gwen Dewbirst and Cbrissie Ness, recitations; Miss Luella Hamer, pianoforte; Mr E. Sountag, banjo-mandolin; Mr A. Hanna, songs; Master James Flett, fling and sailor’s hornpipe. The club is indebted to Mr W. Matheson for playing the bagpipes as accompanist. Mr L. S. Highfield (club captain) was complimented on the capable manner in which he was carrying out his duties. Mr Highfield, on behalf of the Coaching Committee, presented the medal for the most improved junior. Messrs F. Fraser and I. Laing, who represented the vice-presidents, made several presentations of cups and trophies. An apology was received from Mr S. G. Stychc, donor of the Harbour Swim Cup, for his unavoidable absence. The following trophies were presented:—Styohe Cup, annual harbour swim, M. K. Nelson; Hislop Vase, junior girls’ championship, Miss Rita Smith ; junior boys’ championship cup, David Laing; Kaikorai Cup, junior girls, Miss Audrey Horton; junior boys’ challenge cup, Kenneth Foxton; Glen Cup, intermediate boys, Jack Ness; girls’ challenge cup, Miss E. Stephens; Ritchie Cup, senior ladies, Miss B. Martin; men’s challenge cup, E. Sonntag; ladies’ championship cup, Miss B. Martin ; men’s championship cup, W. Darling; medal for most improved junior, Gerald Foxton. Certificates were awarded to those swimmers who completed the course in the harbour race. The Ladies’ Committee was responsible for the supper arrangements, and an enjoyable evening terminated with games and song.
