REFUGEES AT GIBRALTAR
DISORDERLY DEMONSTRATION OBJECTIONS TO CLOSING OF GAMP Press Association-By Telegraph-Copyright GIBRALTAR, September 14. The authorities’ sudden decision to close the refugees’ camp accommodating SOO British men, women, and children led to a disorderly demonstration, following a quiet procession which included women and banner bearers demanding the rights of British subjects. The police shepherded the procession to the police station as it moved toward Government House and arrested several persons. The remainder volunteered to accompany them to gaol. The police made a baton charge, injured several, and dispersed the remainder, but subsequently groups excitedly paraded the streets. Police are guarding Government House. Apparently the refugees, carrying belongings, must spend the night in the streets. Further disturbances are feared. ADVISED TO RETURN TO THEIR HOMES GIBRALTAR, September 14. (Received September 15, at 1.30 p.m.) Fourteen British subjects were remanded on charges arising out of Sunday’s disturbances. Meanwhile the homeless refugees are assembled at Government House in order to protest. The police dispersed them after the fire brigade demonstrated with hoses. The Governor advised the refugees to return to their undamaged homes at Lalinea, where the conditions were quiet. He promised protection in the event of further warfare.
