LITTLEBOURNE HOUSE

USE AS CONVALESCENT HOME GR M'MILLAN'S PROPOSAL A suggestion that Littlebourne Hons* should be used as a mothers’ convalescent home was made by Cr M'Millan to the City Council at its meeting last mght, a motion being carried that the Finance Committee prepare a report on the subject. The mayor (Rev. E. T. CoS) said he saw no objection to the proposal being considered by the hmance Committee, but he did not favour it, being or the opinion that it was not the function of the .council ana that Littlebourne Rouse was not suitable for a such a purpose. Cr M'Millan said he thought the council should consider the question of turning Littlebourne House into a convalescent home for mothers. If tho matter were considered now, the legislation could b© put through the House during the present session. Cr Mitchell said that the procedure to be adopted was for the question to be referred to the Finance Committee, which would want information as to the cost. Cr M'Millan moved that the Finance Committee be asked to' prepare a report accordingly. Cr Neilson, seconded tho motion. Cr Allen: What has it to do with Parliament? The first thing to do would be to get the sanction of tho Roberts family. Cr M'Millan said that his proposal would not contravene the conditions under which Littlebourne House was presented to the city. The mayor (Rev. E. T. Cox) said that he saw no reason why the matter should not go to the Finance Committee, but he did not intend to support the proposal. It was the duty of the Hospital Board to provide such a home as suggested by Cr M'Millan. Littlebourne House was not suitable for the purpose, and it would cost £5.000 or £IO,OOO a year to maintain such a home. He knew of more suitable purposes to which Littlebourne House could be devoted. , Cr M'Millan said it was not the function of the Hospital Board to provide such a home. The Mayor: It is certainly not the function of the City Council, though we might make a grant towards such * purpose. The motion was carried.
