THE PRICE LIST.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —May I state, both as a reader and an advertiser of yonr paper, ’ that I read with amusement your article in Saturday night’s paper entitled ‘ The Price List.’ As a retail draper of 15 years’ standing in this town T wish strenuously to deny the remarks made by the writer (Mary Scott). The general idea that prices have advanced is accepted by most as a fact, but let me state definitely that this is not so. As drapers retailing 100 per cent, of ,clothing attire for adults, I can state that we have only two lines in our establishment that have advanced in price, and these lines are woollen goods and advanced in price on account of the rise in .the price of wool. While admitting ' that a general rise in actual manufacturing costa has taken place, any retailer can tell you, and prove this fact, that in many cases the advance will not be passed on to the public, but will be borne by the retailer. This happened in many cases when the s.ales tax first came in. As a retailer serving the public daily, I absolutely deny the statement implied of disgruntled shoppers. The shopping public has never been in better shopping mood for many years, and sales are brisk and easy.—■ I am, etc., ■ ■ Retailer. N.B.—lf the Waiter of the abovementioned article doubts these statements I will be pleased to have her in our establishment next Friday night, when she can see and hear for herself. [The article was not based on Dunedin’s experience.—Ed. E.S.]
