WAKARI IMPROVEMENT SOCIETY

THE ANNUAL MEETING The first annual meeting of the Wakuri Improvement Society (.incorporated) was held at Wakari School on Saturday, when there was a full attendance of members. Mr W. S. Cubitt, chairman, briefly outlined the various works carried out by the society since its inauguration, and particularly referred to the fact that the society had been successful in having a trial bus service commenced. Mr Cubitt urged those present to make ns much use as possible of the bus, and to encourage it use by others with a view to having the service made permanent. . Mr C. J. Robinson moved the adoption of the annual report, which was seconded by Mr W. T. Millar. The Chairman mentioned the assistance and ready response received from the Dunedin City Council in regard to ahy matters brought to its notice, and referred to the improvements effected in street lighting at the request of the society, in addition to many other works of value to the district. He also referred to the co-operation which had been given the society by various property owners in the district in the cutting back of overhanging trees and hedges. The Secretary mentioned that a further light was about to be installed in Berwick street near Ethel street in response to a request from the society. The adoption of the balance sheet and statement of receipts and expenditure, which disclosed a small credit balance, was moved by Mr G. E. Mawhinney and seconded by Mr C. J. Robinson. Mention was made of the improvement effected on the school grounds by the alteration of the fence at the Shetland street intersection, with a view to improving visibility, a work that had been made possible by a donation towards the cost from the Automobile Association of Otago. The election of executive resulted as follows: —Chairman, Mr W. S. Cubitt; vice-chairman, Mr C. J. Robinson ; secretary and treasurer, Mr R. T. Stydman; committee—Mrs d. Bauld, Mrs VV. S. Cubitt, Messrs C. W. M'Donald, John Bain, jun., W. T. Millar, Thomas Graham, Roy Millar ,and M. Willis; auditor, Mr John W. Jowsey. At the conclusion of the business a social gathering was held, musical items being rendered by Mrs Stedman’s party and °Mr G. Swan, while Miss Freda Cubitt entertained with elocutionary items. Dr D. G. M'Milhr.i, M.P., was present for a short time, and gave an address in which he stressed the value to the district of an organisation of householders and ratepayers in bringing before the local authorities and the Government any matters affecting the welfare of the district. At the conclusion of the entertainment supper was partaken of, after which votes of thanks to performers closed the evening.
