SOUTH OTAGO NOTES

[From Oue Balclutiia Correspondent.] September 14. WOMEN’S HOCKEY. The final of the South Otago Hockey Association’s interclub competition was played at Stirling on Saturday afternoon, the finalists being Bruce A and Stirling. The result was a win for Bruce by five goals to nil after a fast and interesting game. The ground was rough, and difficulty was found in controlling the ball. The first spell was very even, and at half-timo Bruce led 1-0. During the last 20 minutes of the second spell, however, Bruce dominated the play and added another four goals. The only score in the first spell was a goal by R. Kreft. Stirling attacked on several occasions, but could not break through, the defence being sound. In the first part of the second spell Stirling kept Bruce busy defending till I. Morris secured about halfway and went right through to score a fine goal. Bruce now played better, and before the finish goals were scored by R. Kreft, V. Kreft, and R. Smoothey. For the winners Z. Morris and H. Murray played good games at fullbacks; I. Morris played a sound game at centre-half; in the forwards the Kreft sisters were the most prominent. For Stirling J. Perkins in goal saved brilliantly on occasions; F. Baird and A. Duncan played well as halves; D. Fairbairn, J. Duncan, and L. Kirkness also played well. The outstanding player in the team was F. Perkins.
