WOMEN’S CRICKET
DEFINITE IMPROVEMENT SHOWN OTAGO'S ASSOCIATION REPORT The fourth annual report of the Otago Women’s Cricket Association states, inter alia:— A definite improvement in the standard of play was shown by the representative team, which succeeded in winning the Mary Machin Shield for the first time. At a meeting of representatives from the various secondary schools, held at the beginning of the season, it was decided that the schools should commence practice, and as soon as the girls had received sufficient instruction intcrschool matches could be played. An appeal to the Otago Cricket Association for coaches for the schools found a ready response, and the interest and assistance of the association were appreciated. The finanical position of the association, while not as good as last season, is satisfactory, the balance sheet showing a credit balance of £sl 6s, as compared with £64 5s at the conclusion of the previous year. Fourteen clubs were affiliated to the association during the past season, six A grade, eight B grade, and 5 C grade teams being entered. Two new I clubs affiliated, Mornington and Koputai, while H. 8., Mooneys, Woolworths, and Mayfair withdrew from the competitions. The Otago team played Canterbury for the Mary Machin Shield at Logan Park on Friday and Saturday, December 27 and 28. Canterbury in the first innings compiled 127 runs, and in the second innings 65 runs. Otago in the first innings compiled 75 runs, and in the second innings were six wickets for 121 runs. Otago won by four wickets. A team selected from the B grade played a match against Southland on the Oval on March 23. Southland, batting first, compiled 85 runs, and Otago replied with 41 runs. Southland won on the first innings. Mrs W. A. Ross entertained the Canterbury and Otago teams at her residence on Sunday, December 29, a very pleasant evening being enjoyed by all. The association’s annual dance was held at the Early Settlers’ Hall on May 13, and was thoroughy enjoyed by the largo crowd who attended. During the evening the association’s trophies were presented to their winners bv Mrs H. R. Daniels.
