BRIGHTON ROAD
TO BE TAR-SEALED AMENITIES SOCIETY'S ANNUAL MEETING The annual meeting of the Brighton Advancement and Amenities Society was held in the Brighton Hall on Saturday evening. Mr G. \V. Bush presided over a good attendance. Mention was made of tho death of Mr AI cx. Ma nn. for many years a member of the committee, and an indefatigable worker in the interests of the district. ANNUAL REPORT. 'flic fifteenth annual report and balance sheet slated that, since the last annual meeting, the committee had been active in endeavouring to have the Green Jsland-Brighton road tarsealed. A meeting of ratepaj-ers had been held on January 30 to discuss proposals for a loan for tho purpose, at which Mr J, Logan, county clerk, addressed the meeting. The following motion was carried unanimously:— “ That this meeting recommends the loan proposal to all ratepayers, and those present pledge themselves, not only to vote at the poll, but to do all in their power to ensure that all ratepayers do so.” The committee again circularised ratepayers in connection with tho poll, which was field on February 12, and arranged with the county council for a polling booth at the I'larly Settlers’ Hall for the convenience of Dunedin residents. The result of the poll was eminently satisfactory, the record of votes being: in favour of the proposal 812, against 108, informal 6. Although the matter had taken time to complete, tho county council had the finance arranged, and was now calling tenders for tho work, so that in a few weeks a start could be made. to thank the councillors for the Kaikorai and Otokia ridings (Messrs Brinsdon and G. Stevenson) for keeping the road in such good order during the holiday period, it was realised that, with the enormous traffic, it was impossible to maintain a gravel road without tho continuous expense of a grader, and it was felt that, when the road was sealed, the dust nuisance would be eliminated and tho cost of upkeep Jess to the council. They also appreciated the assistance and advice received from tho president, secretary, and officers of the Automobile Association (Otago). A sum of £lO was donated to tho Domain Board towards tho cost of enlarging the ladies’ bathing shed. This building had been doubled in size and would serve tor a number of-years. The financial returns tor the year showed a slight total increase over the previous year. Bent from the cottages
was £3l Os, an increase of over £10; dances, £73 12s, a decrease of £8; hire of halt and supper room, an increase of £3. The balance sheet showed a surplus of assets over liabilities of £1,205, as against £1,201 2s 6d in 1935, and £1,145 6s 8d in 1934. The actual receipts showed an increase of £3 10s, On the committee’s recommendation to the last annual meeting £IOO had been paid off the cottages, leaving them free, and a mortgage of £3OO on the hall still remained. The chairman'moved the adoption of the annual report and balance sheet, which was seconded by Mr J. Blackie. Satisfaction at tho very healthy state of tho society’s finances was expressed by Air J. Allen. Ho thought that, if the road were tar-sea led they could expect more visitors. He knew that the work done by the secretary (Mr A. J. Allen) had been responsible for the now road Tho report was adopted. ELECTION OK OFFICERS. Tho election of oflicors resulted;— Patron, Mr James Allen; president, Mr G. IV.
