THIS AFTERNOON'S MATCH SOUTHERN'S EARLY LEAD The premier Otago and Canterbury teams—Southern and Sunnyside—met in the match for the Payne Trophy as the curtain-raiser to the New Zealand Australia second Rugby, test at Carishrook this afte*won. The weather was sunny, and th* wind felt earlier; in the day had moderated considerably. Southern opened the scoring /when Moreland- took advantage-of a. kick by Fullerton to, score. ‘ Trevathan converted. Southern 5, Sunnyside 0. Keeping up a- steady advance, the home team frequently gained ground, but was unable to pass the Sunnyside defence, while Trevathan was unsuccessful with a, series of pots. Outside its own- twenty-five Southern was penalised, Fulton putting the ball over from an easy position.
Southern 5, Sunnyside 8. Southern’s attack was-continued, and penalties on both sides were of no avail. The half-time scores were unaltered.
