NATIONAL UNEMPLOYED WORKERS' MOVEMENT The general meeting of the Dunedin branch of the National Unemployed Workers’ Movement was held in the Trades Hall on Tuesday evening. _ Cr M. Silverstone (president) presided over a very large attendance of meJnbers and their wives. A vote of sympathy was accorded to the relatives of a member who was accidentally killed since last meeting, the members standing in silence as a token of respect. Correspondence was read and received and dealt with from the Prime Minister (Right Hon. M. J. Savage), Minister of Labour (Hon. _ H. T. Armstrong),clerk of the Waikouaiti Council, secretary of the Lawrence branch of the N.U.W.M., South Dunedin Unemployed Association, Sawyers Bay N. U.W.M., general secretary of the N.U.W.M., Wellington, and various other local organisations. A report of a deputation to the Water Committee yesterday placing men on full-time work at North Taieri Camp was received. The executive’s action in appointing the secretary and Mr J. Spence to co-operate with South Dun-
edin Association to meet the local M.P.s in an effort to get relief worker* placed on the 40-hour basis was endorsed. The monthly financial statement was considered satisfactory and adopted. The organising report was submitted, this - showing _ that 15 had joined l , 9 rejoined, 2 died, 8 transferred to full-time work, leaving the membership on books at present 1,015. The following resolution was carried unanimously That this meeting of the N.U.W.M. emphatically protest* and expresses its indignation at the action of various local bodies all over New Zealand in putting men off work and on to sustenance. We are of the opinion that this action on the part of various local bodies in New Zealand has been taken with the deliberate purpose of embarrassing the Labour Government in its programme of reconstruction.”- !
