PRODUCTION DIREGTM APPOINTED As a result of the increasing importj ance of the Empire service of th» 8.8. C. and, the consequent expansion in the activities of the Empire department, it has become necessary to add a production director to the establishment of the department. The post i| to be filled by Howard .Rose, a 8.8. C. producer whose work is, already well known to Home listeners. Listeners overseas were offered an example, of Mr Rose’s technique in the production of ‘Blackout,’ a radio play by How. ard Thomas that was broadcast > from Daventry this week. . Howard Rose joined the 8.8. C. in 1925, although he had had associations with broadcasting years before 'that—• as an actor he broadcast {in scenes from Shakespeare) in April, 1923, from Mar. coni House. He was, of course, an experienced actor before ever he stood before a microphone—he was a member of Miss Hornunan’s Repertory . Company, he played at His Majesty’s Theater under Tree, at St. James Theatre under Alexander, and has worked with Ainley. ' During his service with the 8.8. C. Mr Rose has been responsible. for at least 600 productions, outstanding among them being *Dr (accounted one of the best comedies ever broadcast), ‘Jane Eyre,’ ‘The Forest,’ ‘Sir Christopher Wren,* ‘The School for Scandal,’ ‘ Bulldog Drummond, and Shakespeare’s ‘ Richard lII.’
Because 1,800 programmes are broadcast a month in Chicago alone, the N.B.C. of America has just .•opened, three new studios there.
