SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA CONCERT
The cognoscenti, as well _ as the patron of average appreciation, will be well catered for at the concert to be given by the Symphony Orchestra on Wednesday evening next. Among the major works will be Schubert’s ‘ Symphony in B Minor,’ usually called the “ unfinished,” because it consists of only two movements instead of the customary Coni'. There uro many reasons why listeners never tire of hearing this richly beautiful piece of music, the principal one probably being that it is largely a question of melody. Schubert was an inexhaustible weaver of melodies, and these are, almost always, _of such ravishing simplicitly and inspired craftsmanship that one naturally sets them apart as different and equally beautiful. The ‘ Unfinished Symphony ’ has at least half a dozen of these magnificent melodies, and it has so many other qualities, all of them as happily controlled and grouped, that the fact that it is held in greater affection than any other symphony is a matter of complete understanding. Another work that should _ impress _ will he Grieg’s ‘ Concerto in A Major,’ and of this composition an authority has stated that “ here is a work that, apart from its wonderfully effective writing for the solo instrument, contains some of the most beautiful and original orchestration of _ modern times.” The pianoforte solo is in the capable hands of Olive Campbell, and her association witli the orchestra should provide a 'remarkable musical exposition.' The remaining items from the orchestra, which will he under the guidance of Gil Doch. arc of a bright and happy nature npd should be appreciated, Ti:o well-known singer, Freda Ehncs, is down for three items, and ot these, Weber’s ‘ Ocean Thou Mighty Monster,’ will have full orchestral accompaniment. Mrs Drake will be the accompanist,. The plan is 1 at Begg’a.
