A BIBLICAL ANNIVERSARY
In 1538 the State issued an injunction that a copy of the English Bible should be placed in every parish church. A movement has now been _ started,'says the ‘ Manchester Guardian, . for; the celebration in 1938 of the> fourth tury of'this ordinance.. Influential members of the Church of England and of Nonconformity—the Archbishop or Canterbury, the Bishop of, Manchester, and Dr Scott Lidgett—are sponsoring the proposed commemoration, and a national council- has been formed, ’■ The aim of the promoters, I gather, _is to set before the public the recognition of the immense and beneficial influence' which the English Bible has exercised upon the ideals that have moulded the character of the people in Great Britain and throughout the world. The organisers of the movement are approaching the school authorities to enlist their co-operation in the commemorative and educative programme which is- being prepared. The National Council is.arranging for the supply of suitable literature to assist the teachers, and local education authorities are being asked to allow the school organisation to be used for the purpose. •:
