BRIEF MINISTRIES
Spain’s record for Sunday, with Senor Quiroga Prime Minister in the morning, Senor Barrios at midday, and Senor Giral in the evening, seems to be the limit in instability. There was a case in Mexico in 1913 when a, new President’s term of office lasted for exactly 26 minutes, but the Mexican tradition has always been volcanic, while Spain has leaned to the side of dignity. Another tradition that seems to have gone in the scuffle is that of “ manana.” Our own best effort in the way of brevity goes as far back as 1746. when. Mr Poultney (afterwards Earl of Bath) took office as Prime Minister on. February 10. and resigned after 18h Imin (and llsec, says the more meticulous historians). In modern times the late W. H. Smith once held the post of Irish Secretary for 24 hours.— ‘ Observer.’
