M'Elwain, director of publicity for Fuller, Hayward, and Co., arrived in Dunedin by the express yesterday afternoon. _ • The following appointments Lave been made to the staff of the Publio Library by the Library Committee:— Miss O. Campbell 'as bookbinder and Miss M, Black, at present on the relieving staff, to be placed on the .permanent staff to fill the vacancy caused by the retirement of Miss A. O. Paterson. Mr Geoffrey Eastgate, of the South British Insurance Company, a son of Mr and . Mrs £. L. Eastgate, Maori Hill, has received notice of his transfer to Tokio, Japan, and will leave on Sunday evening for the East. A Press Association cable message from Sydney states that the Board of Cricket Control, at its annual meeting,appointed Dr Alan Robertson as chairman.

Mr P. N. Bundle returned by the north express yesterday from a visit to Hawke’s Bay. The members of the' Australian Rugby football team which is touring New Zealand arrived in Dunedin by the south-bound express yesterday afternoon and were welcomed at the station by members of the Dunedin City Council and the Otago Rugby Union. An informal function was later held in the Grand Hotel lounge, where the mayor (the Rev. E. T. Cox) extended a welcome to the visitors and expressed the hope that they would enjoy their stay in the city. Dr Perry, the president of the Otago Rtigby Union, Mr E. J. Anderson, the president of the Otago Football Association, and Mr H. M. Mackay, on behalf of the Australian Society of Otago, also welcomed the members of the team. Mr K. H. Cerutti briefly responded. • As a farewell to Mr S. B. Macdonald prior to his departure for Auckland, , the directbrs and staff of the New Zea- ' land Mortgage Trust and Bond Corporation Ltd. 'entertained him on Wednesday afternoon. Mr Arthur Ellie referred to Mr Macdonald’s valued assistance to the company, arid spoke of his . unstinted services in the general interests of the community. On behalf of the board, he presented Mr Macdonald, with a smoker’s cabinet and also handed him an engrossed letter expressing high appreciation of his services in the interests of the company.. The others present also endorsed the chairman’s remarks and wished Mr Macdonald the best of success in his new sphere. Mr Macdonald suitably acknowledged the gifts and expressions of goodwill and wished. the company every success. The directors, auditors, and staff of • the United Insurance Company Limited met Mr Macdonald on Thursday afternoon to wish him every success and good luck in his new appointment as manager af. Auckland. Mr J. W. Thomson, of the local board of directors, in presenting to Mr Macdonald a suitablyengraved wristlet watch as a token of the esteem and regard in which he is held, expressed the deep regret of all present at losing from the local branch one whom tehy have always looked upon as a friend, and . b the same time offered his hearty congratulations to Mr Macdonald upon his promotion. Ho also mentioned that Mr Macdonald has been connected with the United Insurance Company for 32 years, 18 of which, have been as manager of Otago and Southland. Mr Thomson’s remarks w_re supported by Mr J. S, M’lnnea as auditor and Mr A. Davie (chief clerk), on behalf of the staff. Mr Macdonald suitably [acknowledged the gift and exof goodwill, but stressed tho point that his success was largely measured by the loyalty and efficiency of his local staff. Mr Macdonald leaves foe Auckland on Monday, the 14th Mr J. N. Greenland, who has been appointed general manager of tha Union Steam Ship Company in succession to Mr J. W. Matthewson, was born at Westport on June 26, 1887. Ha joined the Union Steam Ship Company as a junior in the Westport office in 1902, and has beien in its employ ever since. He was transferred to the purser staff in 1904 and served in practically all the company’s trades until December, 1914, when he was granted leave of absence to proceed on active service. On his\ return he was appointed to the Dunedin branch, and iri , July, 1919, he was transferred to Wellington. Subsequently be held successively the positions of sub-manager at Lyttelton from 1921, manager at Timaru from 1927, manager at Christchurch from 1930, and manager at Auckland from 1934. In January, 1936, Mr Greenland was transferred to the head office, Wellington, to occupy the position of assistant general manager. Mr M. B. Miller, whose.appointment as assistant general manager of the Union Steam Ship Company was announced on Wednesday, is in hi» fortyfifth year. He was born in Wellington, and joined the company’s service early in 1908 at Dunedin and served iri head office departments, for two years on tbe . purser staff, and in several positions in the Dunedin branch until in October, 1915, he was granted leave of absence to join the New Zealand Expeditionary Force. In July, 1919, h« rejoined the Dunedin branch, and was soon transferred to the head office as private secretary to Sir Charles Holdsworth, then managing director of the company, with whom he, proceeded on business visits to the United States, Canada, and England on two occasions, and to Australia at intervals. Between March, 1924, and July, 1925, Mr Miller served at branches on relieving duties, and at the head office as examiner of costs. His service at the head office was continued by transfer to the post of chief assistant to the management. The following staff appointments are announced by the Union Steam Ship Company; —Mr A. N. Leslie, of the head office staff, is to become chief assistant to the general manager. Mir L. J. Warren, of Auckland, is to b# branch manager at Rarotonga. Mr H, Whyte, the company’s providore super, intendent, has resigned from September 30 owing to ill-health, and Mr H. G. South, local superintending steward , at Auckland, has been appointed to succeed him. Mr W. L. Ford, assistant providore superintendent, is to become local superintending steward at Auckland, and Mr S. G. Almao, chief stew* ard on the Taraahine, is to be assistant to the providore superintendent.
