DOMESTIC 'WORKERS.

TO T3E EDITOR. Sir,—T notice with pleasure that the Government intends to bring down measures of legislation the. aim of which is to improve the present lot of domestic workers and their unsheltered position both as regards their employment and dismissal. Let me give you an in-

stance which occurred the other day in this city. An employer telegraphed a girl, who applied xo Her lor a position in her house, to come to town. The girl came hurriedly—took a taxi to this person’s residence—only to be told at the door that this employer was suited, and did not now require her services. The girl, a stranger to the city, was, to say the least of it, in an awkward position. Fortunately, someone advised her to apply to a woman in this city, well-known in the Labour movement and also a member of the Employment Board, and after an hour or so the girl was well placed for the evening. Next day this girl, being thoroughly well qualified in domestic work, was easily placed in a position. This is only one instance of this kind of happening. Therefore it is hoped

that the Government will evolve soma kind of a placement bureau to whicli girls and women employed in domestio, work could appeal. As has been said often' by investigators of this employment, many of the employers of domestic labour require training as much aa the employees.—l am, etc., L.G. September 10.
