WILKIE ROAD.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —Some months ago I drew attention to the disgraceful state of Wilkie road. What happened? An engineer was sent to investigate, consequently the pot holes were filled in and the path was patched up; but since then nothing has been done except to put metal down and for an occasional gang of relief workers to sweep it back into the middle of the road. How much does this cost the ratepayers? Certainly more than the local residents pay ' in rates, which is on an average of £8 10s a year. The path to Wardrop’s is certainly all that could be desired, but why should a local firm be allowed to abuse this footpath to the extent it does? Other.firms have to have suitable run-in tracks, so why should there not be one here ? From there on to the track leading to South road is a disgrace, especially in front of the empty sections. Lately the water has been streaming across here, giving people damp feet. We cannot lay all the blame on the corporation. What about the actual property-holders, that wealthy Church Board which draws good money for nothing, yet has not the courtesy to look after what vacant property it does hold. A drainage system here would greatly benefit. I suggest that, instead of worrying about Saturday’s hotel closing they should co-oper-ate with the City Council and suggest ways and means of doing something .of benefit to the local residents and pedestrians. We do not need to expect much of the works department, taking into consideration that it has built a very nice bank along the railway, and is going to make a neat path from Neville street to South road, which will certainly be a boon to cyclists; but surely if_ the Church Board would assist the City Corporation could find a few pounds to reorganise this one stretch of path that is a source of danger to all.—l am, etc., Daily Pedestrian, September 10.
