HUNTLY MINES RESUME
CONFERENCE NEXT WEEK [Per United Press Association.]' HAMILTON, September 9. After a conference in the Huntly Town Hall yesterday lasting over two hours, the miners in the Huntly district who stopped work on Monday decided to return to work to-day. The men, about 1,000 in number, were addressed by the Minister of Mines (the Hon. P. C. Webb), the Minister of Public Works (the Hon. R. Semple), and the Hon. F. E. Lark, M.L.C., all of whom advised them to return to work, as a conference would take place on Tuesday next between the owners’ and the employees’ representatives. The president of the Northern Miners’ Union (Mr I. Hutchinson) presided. The dispute arose out of : demand by the truckers for a 40-hour week with pay equivalent to what they are receiving for longer working hours. The men have been largely working on Saturdays doing repair work, much of which is difficult to perform when tho miners are producing coal. The miners agreed to work until such time as a conference could be arranged between the owners and the men. A number of truckers in each mine, however, refused to work and caused a general stoppage.
