GENERAL LABOURERS' UNION
REQUEST FOR FORTY-HOUR WEEK At their last meeting the members of the Otago and Southland Labourers’ Union carried resolutions congratulating Mr M. Silverstone upon his appointment by the Government as a director of the Reserve Bank, also Mrs F. M. Don upon her appointment to the position of inspector of factories. ' They also congratulated the Government upon the introduction of the 40-hour week without loss of wages. A special resolution was carried requesting all builders and contractors and county councils to make the necessary arrangements to adopt the 40-hour week for all labourers in their employment, and to adjust the wages in accordance with those of all the other labourers working under amended awards. The members of tho union considered it an injustice that these workers should be called upon to perform work relating to the building trade and contracting work and to receive less pay for such work than the rate of pay stipulated for relief work.
