‘THE AMATEUR GENTLEMAN'
JEFFERY FAMOUS FILMiSATION AT REGENT One of the most colourful periods of history has been brought to the screen by Criterion Films, in the screen adaptation of ‘ The Amateur Gentleman/ which opens to-morrow at the Regent. Adapted from Jeffery Farad's novel of the same name, the story is laid in England during the time of the Prince Regent. These were days of merry-making, at least for the young bloods about town and the beautiful women who graced the Carlton House ballroom. Money flowed freely over the gambling tables, and honour was defended at the point of the sword. Into this romantic background the producers have woven drama packed with thrill from start to finish. The picture is a triumph of swift direction which does not allow the pace to slow down for an instant. Douglas Fairbanks, juu., in the leading role of Barnabas Barty is shown as an actor of the front rank, possessing a dynamic personality and suggesting an underlying strength of purpose. Outstanding in the supporting cast is Esme Percy, whose characterisation as a dandy and a friend of the Price Regent is responsible for many humorous interludes. The Cockney humour of Gordon Barker is nicely restrained, and provides a light touch against the more serious vein of the more dramatic sequences. Elissa Landi wears both the Regency gowns and the Regency manner as one born to the purple, and is most effective in her role opposite Douglas Fairbanks jun. Heading the supporting programme is Walt Disney’s latest silly symphony in colour, ‘ The Cock of the Walk/
