COUNCIL'S MONTHLY MEETING The briefest agenda paper for many months was dealt with by the Peninsula County Council at its monthly meeting. held at Portobello this morning. Present were the chairman (Cr H. Macandrew), Grs J. Cross, W. D. Stewart, J. T, Irvine, T. S. Edmonds, J. J. Nyhon, J. Hellyer, D. J. S. Robertson, and J. W. Harbrow. CORRESPONDENCE. In order to remove _ all doubts regarding the responsibility of entering objection to citations in industrial disputes, the New Zealand Counties’ Association asked the council to. enter objections direct to the Clerk of Awards, and also to advise the association accordingly.—Received. _ The council’s decision regarding the proposed work at Pero’s Point was requested by Mr T. M. Ball, Main Highways Board’s representative. —The council resolved to submit an alternative proposal to the board,. embodying the cutting back of the point. Payment of a deposit,on a truck purchased by the board for the council was asked for by the Main Highways Board, which advised that the total cost of the vehicle was £439 7s.—Received.

Because the council had adopted the low voltage system for its lighting scheme, the Works' Committee of the City Council had decided not to accede to Cr Harbrow’s request for the installation of a light at the first bend in Tomahawk road, below the cemetery caretaker’s house, advised the town clerk.—“ The council cannot take any further action,”- remarked Cr Harbrow, the letter, being received. Owing to the decision to unify motor traffic laws throughout the Dominion the Commissioner of Transport, Wellington, asked the council, to submit a copy or its by-laws to the Transport Department.—lt was resolved to accede to the request. A cheque for £l2, part profits of the Mickey’s Fortune art union, to be applied to the general relief of distress’at Portobello, was received from the treasurer of the art union.—Received,

Permission to improve the roadway at Granton Township, Lower Portobello, was given the council by the Otago Harbour Board'.—Received. Mr William Sabiston, Waverley, applied for permission to lay a water pipe along Larnach road.—The application was granted. Application was .made to the council by . Mr V. M. Dickinson, Macandrew Bay, for. the granting of a lease of portion of the road line fronting his property at Craigmore. Mr Dickinson pointed out that the land in question was very dangerous, and had been the scene of a fatality some years ago. He intended to fence it if permission was granted, and also to beautify the land by planting shrubs.—Permission to lease the ground during the cqun-

The following statement, covering th« riding balances in the county was re* viewed and adopted by the council:—t Otago Heads, £24 11s 7d (debit) j San'dymount, £ll9 18s 5d (credit)) Highcliff, £176 10s lid (credit); Tomahawk, £l9 14s 7d (credit) ; Norih-easi Harbour, £ll2 17s (credit) ; Broad Bay. £74 2s lOd (credit); Portobello, £127 4s 3d (debit). The cash balance amounted to £1,113 16s lOd, accounts to be passed for pay* ment totalled £1,413 5s lid, account# already paid amounted to £1,254 16s 7dj - the debit balance being £1,274 6s 2d. Amounts • owing to the council totalled £1,690. RANGER’S REPORT. , The county ranger. (Mr E. Camp* bell) reported that he had impounded 15 head of cattle found wandering on county roads during August. ENGINEER’S REPORT. Work carried out in the county during August was reported on by the county engineer (Mr S. G. Patterson) as follows c— _ ; Otago Heads Riding.—The widening of the Pipikaretu road was progressing satisfactorily. The. crusher had been shifted.to Burns quarry. . ' Portobello Riding.—The widening, of , the school road had been done, and the widening of .the Portobello-Cape Saunders road over Dickson’s Hill was in hand. Water tables had been- cleaned on the Portobello-Otakou Main highway. - Broad Bay Riding.—The widening ol Wilson’s road was still in hand. The forming of a corner at Mr Wilson’s gate was practically completed, and also the widening of the road for approximately 20 chains up the hillWork was commenced for . the purpose of widening the lower portion of this road. A small slip on the Camp road had been cut back to the water table. - Sandymount Riding.—Water tablet had been cleaned on the Ridge road; Highcliff Riding.—Water tables had been cleaned on the Paradise road and also on the Main highway. Tomahawk Riding.—About thre# chains bn Smaill’s road had. been reformed. A slip and a culvert on th* Smaill’s Beach road was being repaired. One culvert had been laid on the Main road. ,

North-east Harbour- Riding.—Formation work had been done at Buccleugh.' Terrace. _ Water tables had , been cleaned in Howard street. Screenings had been spread on the Marine Parade. One culvert was put in in Queen street and one on the Marine Parade.

The grader had been employed during the month on the following roads: — High road, Tomahawk road, PortobelloOtakou road, Riddell’s-Hooper’s Inlet road, Allan’s Beach road, and Craigie and Harringtone road. 1 The report 1 was adopted, V"
