BING CROSBY FOR REGENT

WITH W. C. FIELDS IN ‘MISSISSIPPI 1 Brimful of comedy, romance, and music, ‘ Mississippi,’ which is to be featured at the Regent on Friday, can claim no equal as bright entertainment. Bing Crosby, W. C. Fields, Joan Bennett, and Gail Patrick head a cast of celebrities. Also on the programme, and almost as good as the big film, will be a “ Pop-eye the Sailor ’ cartoon. Reminiscent of ‘ Show Boat ’ in that most of its action takes place on a showboat plying the Mississippi, this film gives Bing Crosby one of his best roles yet in the talkies. The musical numbers which lie handles should all be favourites. His acting, of course, needs no recommendation. There is a strong romantic element in ‘ Mississippi,’ which colourful settings enhance. Charming Joan Bennett plays the romantic lead and seems better than ever after a comparatively long absence from the screen. A newcomer, whose ability has already put her in the forefront of popular actresses, Gail Patrick, plays an important role, W. O. Fields, ns a cantankerous and boastful river-boat captain, excels, and is funnier than ever in a character role which fits him like a glove.
