AMERICA’S BIG TASK
WAGING WAR ON GANGSTERS The story of the rooting out of the American gangsters told in the- film ‘ G-Men,’ which commences a season at the Empire on Friday, is. an amazing and thrilling record of how the Government agents, or “ G-Men,” previously almost defenceless against the gangsters, were armed and sent out to wage rutliless war against the public enemies. The scenes are nothing short of amazing, but the impression of sincerity never weakens. The acting is excellent, bQ*t ‘ G-Men ’ is more remarkable in its plot. Even if the story had been more sensational romancing ‘ G-Men ’ would still be among the most exciting of films, but because it is based on fact the interest is more intense. James Cagney, as a lawyer whose honesty bars his professional progress, turns into an unforgettable detective while keeping his part as far as possible from that of the traditional melodramatic hero. Margaret Lindsay, playing opposite him, acts with poise and assurance, and the always dramatic Ann Dvorak is most convincing.
