Y.M.C.A. DIRECTORS

The monthly meeting of the board of directors was presided over by Mr J. B. Waters. The report of the general secretary, Mr J. H. Don Miller, revealed a highly satisfactory position in association work.

The report stated: —Lectures and addresses had been carried on in the young men’s department, boys’ division, Optimists’ Club,: and residential. The speakers at the residents’ Sunday services had been the Revs. Stevoly, Reay, Olds, More, and Cooke, The young men’s department had been addressed by Mr E. S. Tuckwell on the ‘ Seddon Trial ’ and Rev. Percy Cooke on ‘ Reminiscences of a Digger.’ Church parades had been made to Trinity and Dundas Methodist and First Churches.

The Optimists’ Club weekly luncheon had been addressed by Major Wren on ‘ European Affairs,’ Mr J. Paul on ‘ Abyssinia,’ Mr W. B. Brugh on ‘ Three Small Islands,’ and Mr E. S. Tuckwell on the ‘ Seddon Trial.’

The 4,000 shilling appeal had been successful and the * amount required achieved. Interdepartmental competitions between residents and Y.M.D., includ'Rugby, had been completed. The .icxathlon competition between X. Y.M.C.A. boys’ departments had again been entered for, and results forwarded to Wellington. The Dunedin Y. at present held the Herbert Smith Shield for this competition. The Rotary Club Boys’ Work Committee had recently visited the building and watched tbe boys’ work programme under way. The gymnasium department still maintained its good attendances, the apparatus. Swedish, and boxing work being well attended. The annual display would take place in the gymnasium on October 19 and 21.

Tho swimming pool was being largeU patronised. The Cricket Club had held an enthusiastic meeting and a successful season was assured.

The .boys’ department membership was being well maintained, and the full programme of spiritual, mental, physical, and social education was being presented. During the holidays special educational trips were arranged for the boys, and the following firms were visited:— Gas Works, Hogg and Co., Hudsons, Plicenix, Methvens, Irvine and Stevenson, J. and W. Faulkners, 4 Star,’ Roslyn Mills, A. and T. Burt, Woodhaugh Paper Mills, T. and P. Dairy, Thomsons Cordials, Lanes Cordials, N.Z. -Wax Vesta, N.Z.R. Hillside, Central Fire Station, Milburn Lime and Cement Co., Power Board, Whitcombe and Tombs, Station 4YA, Telephone Exchange, R. and G. boot factory, 454 participating in these visits..
