ANIMAL WELFARE WEEK
Throughout the world October ; 4 ii recognised as “ Animals’. Day,” and for many years now it has been tha custom of the various societies for the Erevention of cruelty to animals to old an animal welfare week. Thiat year it has been considered Appropriate, that' this week should be held to* coincide with Animals 5 Day. The object of Animal Welfare Week is to bring prominently before the public the necessity of taking an interest in the welfare'of animals. Birds and animals cannot speak for themselves, and iti was forum necessary in order to stop the' cruelty and maiglect inflicted on| ■ animals- to fern -sentries for the prevention of ernrity animals.' . The societies have been established through-! out the world, and have been Sis means of prohibiting assay cruelties that were at one tune inflicted upon animals. In. many cases cruelty aaa been caused through thoughtlessness* and in these circumstances it requires! only the attention of the owners ofl animals to be drawn to the fact thatj they are thoughtlessly inflicting pain and suffering on an animal to have the matter remedied. Unfortunately, societies have cases where unfeeling peopla have charge of animals and would continue to ill-treat them were it not for, the vigilance of the inspectors of th# various societies and the police. Veryi often pain is inflicted on animal* through ignorance, and the societies’ inspectors are always ready and willing to show how an ammal can be relieved from suffering, perhaps by padding w horse collar probably or some such suggestion that will prevent an animal being caused pain. , ‘ It is recognised how all animals respond to kindness, and children should be taught to love and the# will soon find how the love is returned* The Otago Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has written tef the members of all churches, superin-4 tendents of Sunday schools, and hea<| masters of schools throughout Otago; asking them to address their congregations and scholars on the necessity of _at all times shotting kindness t* animals and looking after their welfare* and any assistance they can render in this direction wiU ,be "greatly appreciated, _ Parents can also help in thi* direction by instilling into the mind* of their children the desirability of, a| all times_ showing kindness to animal* and looking after their welfare. Citizens can all assist, and if they well report to the Otago Society anj case of neglect or cruelty that come* under their notice, the matter will bo investigated. - There is still present in the community the dog-ppisbning fiend, and this despicable practice is difficult to detect, hut if all lovers of animali - would use every effort to endeavour to detect these dog-killers the publia would have the satisfaction of seeing these people receive a well-deserved punishment. The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, endeavours speak on behalf of those that canned speak for themselves.: bo that it il hoped every citizen will do his share in carrying out the objects of Animal Welfare Week. „ .
